The photography of the collection on this site is the museum's own. It was commissioned by the museum, of objects the museum holds, and the museum controls its reproduction. There is no third-party picture agency in the way, which means a reasonable request can be answered quickly by a person rather than by a licensing desk.
What you may do without asking
Journalists writing about the museum, an exhibition, or an object in the collection may reproduce images from the press kit:
- in an article about the museum or its collection,
- in print, online, and in the publication's own social accounts promoting that article,
- worldwide, for as long as the article remains published,
provided the image is unaltered and carries the credit line below.
Researchers and students may reproduce images from this site in a thesis, a dissertation or a conference paper, with the same credit line, without asking.

Where the object has an accession number, please include it — for example Hookah mouthpiece (mukhnal), Gyan Museum, Jaipur, GM-SIL-0114. An accession number makes the image citable and traceable, which is in everybody's interest.
What you may not do without asking
- Crop, recolour, retouch, filter or composite the image, or place text over the object. The photography is a record of an object; altering it makes it a record of something else.
- Use it commercially — in advertising, on merchandise, on packaging, or to promote a product or service that is not an article about the museum.
- Use it to imply endorsement, association or partnership.
- Sub-license it, resell it, or add it to a stock library.
- Train a machine-learning model on it. Reproduction for an article is one thing; ingesting the museum's photography into a dataset is another, and it is not covered by anything above.
- Use it after an object leaves the collection, if the museum has told you the permission is time-limited.
Photographing in the museum
Photography is not permitted inside the museum. The museum confirmed this on 27 August 2026, and it is stated here because it is the most common practical question the museum is asked and because visitor photographs of the galleries do circulate elsewhere. They predate the policy or were taken without it.
If you need to photograph or film in the galleries — including for a social account with a following — that is a press request rather than a visitor photograph, and it is arranged in advance. Ask before you travel.
Filming, and commercial photography
Film crews, commercial shoots and fashion photography in the galleries are arranged case by case and are not covered by anything on this page. Write to the museum with the date, the crew size, the equipment and the intended use.
Third-party material on this site
Not everything reproduced here belongs to the museum. Press cuttings are reproduced as a record of coverage and their copyright remains with the publication. Photographs credited to a named photographer remain that photographer's. Where a source is named, it is named because it is the rights holder.
Asking for anything else
Write to info@gyanmuseum.com with what you want to use, where it will appear, and for how long. There is no licensing desk between you and the museum: the request is read by the people who run it. A specific request is answered faster than a general one, and a deadline in the first line helps.
