What is Pichwai?

A pichwai is a painted or embroidered cloth hung behind the image of Shrinathji in Vallabhacharya temples, above all at Nathdwara in Rajasthan. It changes with the festival calendar and the season, so a temple keeps many. Cows, lotus ponds and the gopis recur, and the deity is shown frontally with one arm raised.
