Which museum in Jaipur should I visit?
It depends on what you want to look at. Albert Hall is the state museum and the broadest survey; the City Palace holds the royal collections and is the one to see for arms and textiles; Anokhi is the museum of hand block printing; Amrapali and Gyan are private collections of jewellery, silver and objects; the Museum of Meenakari Heritage covers one technique in depth; Jawahar Kala Kendra shows contemporary art; the Museum of Legacies is a restored haveli of craft.
This guide is published by one of the eight museums it describes. You should weigh it accordingly — and the way to make that weighing possible is to say plainly what each of the others does better than us, which is what follows.
Two practical notes before the list. First, this page publishes no opening hours and no admission prices, for anyone, including us. They change, and a guide that prints them goes quietly wrong within a year; every museum's own site is the authority on its own hours. Second, the private museums in Jaipur generally want notice. That is not exclusivity, it is arithmetic: a curator showing you a collection in person cannot do it for forty people who arrive at once.
Albert Hall Museum
The state museum of Rajasthan, in Ram Niwas Garden, in a building by Samuel Swinton Jacob that is itself the reason many people go. It is the oldest museum in the state and the broadest: metalwork, arms, carpets, sculpture, a famous Egyptian mummy, and a great deal of nineteenth-century survey collecting.
Go for: scale, the building, and a sense of what a colonial-era survey museum was trying to do. Be prepared for: crowds, and labels that are of their period. It is the only museum here that a first-time visitor to Jaipur should probably not skip.
The City Palace (Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II Museum)
The royal collections, in the palace complex the family still occupies in part. The textile and costume holdings are the finest in the city, the armoury is serious, and the two vast sterling silver vessels in the Diwan-i-Khas are worth the walk on their own.
Go for: textiles, arms, and the palace. Be prepared for: a ticketing structure with several tiers, and the fact that it is a working royal residence as well as a museum. Nobody else in Jaipur holds objects of this provenance.
Anokhi Museum of Hand Printing
In Amber, in the restored Chanwar Palkiwalon ki Haveli — a restoration that won a UNESCO Asia-Pacific award and would justify the visit even if the museum were empty. It is not: it is the clearest explanation of hand block printing anywhere in India, and there are usually printers and block carvers at work.
Go for: understanding a craft rather than admiring objects. Be prepared for: a seasonal closure in high summer, and a hill. It is the best-taught museum in Jaipur, by some distance.
Amrapali Museum
The private collection of the founders of Amrapali Jewels: silver jewellery and personal objects from across India and its neighbours, shown in depth. Tribal and regional silver is the strength — the material most Indian jewellery museums treat as a footnote.
Go for: silver, and regional range. Be prepared for: booking. The museum takes an enquiry and confirms a slot. They publish an object of the month, which is a small thing done well.
Museum of Meenakari Heritage
A single technique, examined properly. Meenakari — fired glass enamel in cut gold — is the craft Jaipur is actually famous for among specialists, and this is the only museum anywhere devoted to it. The interpretation is unusually good, and the appointment gate is explained rather than merely imposed.
Go for: depth on one subject. Be prepared for: a small building; this is an hour, not an afternoon. Of the private museums in this city, it is the one we watch most closely.
Jawahar Kala Kendra
Not a collection but an arts centre, in Charles Correa's building — a plan laid out on the navagraha mandala, with one square displaced. Exhibitions, performance, and a bookshop.
Go for: contemporary art, and one of the most important buildings of post-independence India. Be prepared for: a programme rather than a permanent display. Check what is on before you go.
Museum of Legacies
In a restored haveli in Kishanpole Bazaar, in the old city. Craft, textiles and objects, shown at a domestic scale, with the building doing much of the work.
Go for: the old city, and a museum you can walk to from the bazaars. Be prepared for: a modest collection, honestly presented.
Gyan Museum
Ours, so read this last paragraph with the most suspicion. Some 2,500 objects across 3,000 years, assembled by one man, Gyan Chand Dhaddha, over five decades: jewellery, silverware, textiles, miniature paintings, manuscripts, coins and arms, in a building by Paul Mathieu in the Sitapura industrial estate, forty-five minutes from the old city. Visits are guided by a curator and are by prior appointment only.
Go for: the coherence of one person's eye, and the silver — the hookah mouthpieces are the collection's centre of gravity. Be prepared for: the location, which is genuinely inconvenient, and the appointment, which is not optional. People have driven twenty-five kilometres and been turned away. Do not come here first. If you have one museum day in Jaipur, spend it at Albert Hall and the City Palace. Come to us on a second visit, or when a specific collection is the reason you are in Rajasthan.
