What is Karni bharni?

Karni bharni means, in substance, that what is done is what is received. In Jain painting the phrase names an illustrated treatment of karmic consequence: registers of scenes in which an act is set beside the retribution it earns, often in the hells. The images are didactic, made to be read in sequence rather than admired one at a time.
