What is Ragamala?

A ragamala is a set of paintings that gives a figure to the modes of Indian classical music. Each raga or ragini is personified — a woman waiting at night, a hero in the rain — and the sheet usually carries a short verse naming the mode, its hour and its season. Sets survive from the Rajput and Deccani courts from the sixteenth century onward.
