Bidri

Also written · bidriware

What is Bidri?

Bidri is a metalwork technique from Bidar in the Deccan. An alloy of zinc and copper is cast, engraved and inlaid with silver or brass wire, then treated with a paste of local soil that blackens the alloy permanently while leaving the inlay bright. The matt black ground against clean silver is the signature of the ware.
