What is Kundan?

Kundan is a setting technique, not a stone. Gold refined to near twenty-four carat is worked at room temperature into malleable foil and pressed in successive layers around an unfaceted gemstone until the stone is held without claws and without solder. The method allows heat-sensitive stones to be set into already enamelled gold, and gives Indian jewellery its burnished collars.
