What is Thewa?

Thewa is a goldwork technique from Pratapgarh in Rajasthan. A sheet of high-carat gold is pierced into a scene, fused onto coloured glass and set in silver, so that the glass — usually green or ruby red — lights the openwork from behind. The craft has been carried by a single family lineage at Pratapgarh since the eighteenth century.
